Poonch is a district of Azad Jammu and Kashmir(AJK). During the Indo-Pak war of 1947-48, district Poonch was divided into two parts. One remained with India, and one became a part of AJK. Information about India occupied Poonch.

The disrict head quarter of AJK's Poonch is Rawalakot. District Poonch(AJK) has a total area of 855 square kilometers and lies in a very hilly region. The district is divided into three tehsils. It is bounded by Bagh district to the north, Sudhnuti to the south, and shares borders with occupied Kashmir in the east and Pakistan in the west. According to 1998-census the total population of the district stands at 412,000.
Poonch was ruled by the Muslim Rajas of Loran until 1837, when it fell into the hands of Raja Faiz Talab Khan of Rahuri. In 1846 after the Treaty of Amritsar, it was handed over to Mahrajah Gulab Singh,. He in turn handed over Poonch and some other areas to his nephews, Jawahar Singh and Moti Singh with some legal stipulations. Poonch was annexed and converted into a Jagir by Mahrajah Hari Singh in 1935-36 after deposing the Raja of Poonch.
Rawalakot is one of the most beautiful valleys of KASHMIR which is located 80 km away from Rawalpindi and Islamabad. By Road It takes two and a half hour to Rawalakot which is also famous by the name of "PEARL VALLEY" its specialty is natural beauty of peaks and also ppl of Rawalakot. The altitude of this beautiful saucer-shaped valley is 1615 meters.
Situated at a distance of 76 kilometers from Kohalla, it is also linked with Rawalpindi/Islamabad via Azad Pattan and Dhalkot and with Muzaffarabad via Kohalla by black top roads.
The construction of Guoien Nullah road between Rawalakot and Azad pattan has considerably reduced the distance and journey time. During summer the place becomes full of green grass and beautiful flowers including many varieties of roses. The town has few good bazaars where all essential commodities of life are easily available.
